The Spanish Working Group on Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (GETECCU) is a prominent medical society in Spain dedicated to the study and research of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). With over 30 years of history and more than 1,300 members across the country, GETECCU's mission is to promote excellence in healthcare, education and research while establishing reliable standards for IBD care in Spain.
GETECCU has developed several important initiatives, including nationwide guidelines and recommendations, regular educational activities for IBD specialists and trainees and a nationwide Quality Certification Programme. In addition, research has been one of the main focuses of the society, where the ENEIDA registry has been the leading project since its launch in 2006, with more than 110 participating centers and 80,000 patients included so far. Moreover, multiple research projects have been developed, building a prominent collaborative network of centres.
The society has also established a close and strong relationship with other scientific societies, including the Spanish Gastroenterology Society (AEG), Spanish Society of Primary Care Physicians (SEMERGEN), Spanish Society of Coloproctology (AECP), Spanish Society of Rheumatology (SER) and Spanish Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (SEGHNP).
Therefore, through these effort and initiatives, GETECCU plays a crucial role in advancing IBD care, research and education, ultimately aiming to improve the quality of life for patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Role within INTERCEPT
GETECCU is the partner that will collaborate and coordinate INTERCEPT in Spain. Participating sites will include certified IBD Units with extensive experience in collaborative and translational research in IBD. In addition, the society will manage the dissemination of the project along with local and national patient organizations. GETECCU will serve as coordinator and supervisor for all study procedures, therefore ensuring that all the required steps will be adequately performed at each step. During the duration of INTERCEPT, GETECCU will promote any advances related to the project, and the results will be supported and disseminated at national level accordingly.
